Stanley “Stan” Fenn Mather, 94, of St. Joseph, passed away on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at Hanson Hospice Center – Stevensville
Stan was born June 19,1923 in St. Joseph to Dan and Lillian (Flanders) Mather. He grew up in St. Joseph and graduated from St. Joseph High School with the class of 1941. He attended Michigan State University and played trombone in their marching band before enlisting in the United States Army. He served in the 78th division of the Army during World War II. He returned home and receive a degree from Trine University (formally Tri-State University) in Civil Engineering.
On January 15, 1955, he married Mary Alice Dietmeier, in Saugatuck. They lived first in Higman Park, in Benton Harbor, before moving to Montreal, Canada and then to their treasured home on the shores of Lake Michigan in Shoreham Village, where they raised four children and lived for fifty-one years.
Stan worked at New Products Corporation, The Whirlpool Corporation and for Trickl-Eez Irrigation. He served as a counsel member of the Village of Shoreham and for many years worked as the village lamplighter. Stan was an early board member at Sarett Nature Center. He enjoyed genealogy and in 2006 he became a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.
Stan was well known to his neighbors for the countless hours he spent working to prevent his home from falling into the lake and for being able to fix all of their broken appliances, and everything else. For the past twenty years, Stan and his wife Mary have spent their summers with family and friends in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, in beautiful Meeker Park.
Stanley is survived by his wife of sixty-three years Mary, children, Jane Mather of Fraser, CO, Ann (Jim) Higgins of Lolo, MT, John Mather of South Haven and Cheri (Richard Enelow) Mather of Norwich, VT, grandchildren, Liz Higgins, Lucas Mather, Rachel and Andrew Enelow, great-granddaughter, Xerra Mather; and niece, Sally Mather of Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Lillian and brother, Howard Willard Mather.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, March 23, 2018 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph with John Nye officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Saugatuck. Friends may visit with the family from 10 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home.
