Maria Schmidt

Maria Katherina Schmidt, 96, passed away Monday, January 29, 2018 in Lapeer, Michigan. A private family service was held on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Services, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph.  Maria was laid to rest next to her late husband at Riverview Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to Hometown Residential Hospice, 1681 Woodbridge Park Ave., Lapeer, MI  48446.  Those wishing to sign Maria’s memory book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Maria was born March 15, 1921, in Monchengladach, Germany, to Heinrich and Christine (Kronenberg) Maeurer.  She married Wilhelm Schmidt in her hometown on January 21, 1950.  Maria and Wilhelm made their home on Lions Park Drive in St. Joseph.  Maria stayed home and raised their two sons and daughter. Maria was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Maria was a good cook and a wonderful baker.  She crocheted beautiful doilies and knitted colorful afghans, which will be treasured by her family and friends. Maria was a loving mother and grandmother, and will be sadly missed by her family.  Her family extends a special thank you to the staff a Devonshire Retirement Village and Hometown Hospice. Maria is survived by her sons, Manfred (Val) Schmidt of Lapeer, MI, and Peter (Janine) Schmidt of St. Joseph; sister Anneliese Roth; three grandchildren, Corinne (Steve) Turk, Jenny (Joe) Lasceski, & William Schmidt; and three great-grandchildren, Morgan, Mason, & Colton Turk. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter, Hildegard Larragoiti (Schmidt); and sister, Irmgard Lambertz.
