Marjorie was born on November 2, 1927 to the late John and Vera (Wheaton) DeMaar. Her mother, Vera, passed away during childbirth. Her family helped raise her, especially her Aunt Hattie DeMaar and Uncle Lyle and Aunt Zola Wheaton. Marjorie graduated from Muskegon High School in 1946, where she played violin in the symphony. In her years as a young adult, she and her two special cousins, Jeanette and Marietta, were vocalists in their church and were often invited to share their vocal talents with other churches which she enjoyed. She truly loved music. Marge was a bookkeeper until she married James Truhn on June 5, 1948. Several years later, they moved from Muskegon to Coloma to help on the family farm when her father-in-law became ill with cancer. She worked at Sears, with twenty-five years of service. You may remember her as the “Candy Lady”. She cherished her home on Paw Paw Lake that she and James built together.
Even though Marjorie was a lady of few words, she was very caring and compassionate. She was generous, kind, and a true friend. She devoted her life to others and was her husband’s caregiver for many years. Marjorie was small in stature, but large in strength. She was a city girl who came to the country.
Marjorie is survived by her daughters, Rhonda (Richard) Jordan, Karyl (Charles) Salisbury, III, and Valerie (Mark) Wyant; son-in-law, David Hlay, III; grandchildren, Matthew (Erica) LaGrow, Mickey (Julie) Jordan, Shayna (Thomas) Joyce, Charles (Jennifer) Salisbury, IV, Ryan (Laura McLuen) Dolph, Brandon (Jenna) Wyant and Mikey (Lindsay Nottbohm) Hlay and great-grandchildren, Mason and Dalton Jordan, Tyson and Travis LaGrow, Sophia and Giuliana Salisbury and Tommy and Kayla Ann Joyce. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 52 years, James; daughter, Patricia Ann Truhn-Hlay in 2002 and brothers, Henry and Wayne DeMaar.
Mom’s favorite hymn was “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”. The Lord took your hand. Now go rest in peace. We love you, mom.
