Sally's Obituary

Sally A. Cheek, 75, of Stevensville, MI passed away Monday, July 28, 2014 at the Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 914 Lane Dr., St. Joseph with Rev. Dennis Remenschneider officiating. Inurnment will follow the service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Memorial Garden. Friends may visit Monday, August 4 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd. St. Joseph. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the Marie Yeager Cancer Center or the Hanson Hospice Center. Those wishing to send a condolence to the family may do so online at www.starks-menchinger.com Sally was born February 17, 1939 in Northville, MI to Heinz & Elizabeth (Swales) Hilger. She was a graduate of South Lyon High School in 1957. She went on to further her education at Western Michigan University where she received her Bachelor’s in Special Education. Sally then received her Master’s is secondary education from Michigan State. She worked in the Lakeshore School District for over 30 years as a special education teacher until retiring. Sally was very compassionate and spent much of her time volunteering at the Marie Yeager Cancer Center, the Mendel Center, the Krasl Art Center, Lakeland Regional Medical Center and Lakeland Continuing Care Center in Berrien Springs. Sally was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, a member of the Red Hat Society, numerous book clubs, sang in the Misfits and was involved in the retired teacher’s scholarship committee. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter Carolyn (Richard) Sims of Okemos, MI; son Robert  “Bob” (Gina) Cheek of Mattawan, MI; grandsons Austin, Kyle, and Derek; brother Charles (Marilyn) Hilger of Navarra, FL; sister Margaret Krzeminski of Newport Richie, FL and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her daughter Patricia “Patty” Cheek.
