William White passed away February 2, 2014, loved and cherished by his family. Born January 30, 1939, he married Elizabeth (Betsy) Glossinger in 1958 and had four beautiful daughters Kathy, Laura, Mary and Karen. To say he lived for their happiness doesn’t begin to capture his devotion.
Bill graduated from Western Michigan University, and began working for Whirlpool, where he was named Outstanding National Salesman of the year in 1971 and was awarded into Whirlpool Achievement Club. While a great honor for Bill, it was no surprise to those who knew him or happened to share a coffee or a drink with him. Bill made a point of making everyone he met feel special, always interested in what they were doing and where they were going.
Whether it was his Irish background or the history or integrity of the program, Bill lived Notre Dame football. Football Saturday often started on Monday as he prepared for each game as if he’d be lacing up his own cleats and carrying the ball for the Irish. Bill also loved music, especially Frank Sinatra. Watching Sinatra in concert was one of his great joys. While an accomplished tennis player (and Notre Dame football player himself) Bill engaged in all the interests of his daughters, be it tennis, cheerleading or shopping.
Living with a wife and four daughters, Bill enjoyed having some men join the family, with three son-in-laws and three grandsons, whom he lovingly called, Big Guy, Middle Guy and Little Guy. Bill took documented video the minute-by-minute life and times of Michael ” Big Guy” what was Michael doing at 10:43 am March 3, 1989? There’s a video. From preschool through weekend trips home from college, he played and kept a running Nintendo baseball stats with Alex, ” Middle Guy” and attended every one of his home tennis matches throughout high school. A picture of Little Guy’s Jack’s smiling face was the first thing that greeted Bill at his front door.
Though a great man, husband, father, grandfather (Pop) brother, uncle and friend Bill still is profoundly right in his request for his tombstone “The Best Is Yet To Come.”
Bill is survived by his daughter Kathy (Doug) Harbert of St. Joseph, Mary (John) Weinhart of Paw Paw, MI, Karen (David) Rutkowski of Lake Tahoe, CA; three grandsons Michael Harbert, Jack Rutkowski and Alex Harbert and one brother James White of Michigan City, IN. Bill is preceded in death by his wife Betsy and daughter Laura. We love him and will miss him.
