Glenn Arter, Jr., 87, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Crowne Pointe in Stevensville.

Glenn was born on September 30, 1926 to Glen and Bertha (Shingledecker) Arter, Sr. in a farm house south of Dowagiac, Michigan. He graduated from Dowagiac High School in 1944, received his B.S. in Chemistry from Hillsdale College in 1952 and his Master’s in Education from Western Michigan University in 1962. He also attended Michigan Tech, Randolph-Macon College, Montana State University and University of Washington.
Glenn proudly served his country during WWII as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific from 1944 until 1946. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1855 in Dowagiac. On August 6, 1947, he married the former Nancy Edwards in South Bend, Indiana. Glenn was employed as a chemist with Studebaker Corp., and taught high school mathematics, chemistry and physics at Eau Claire High School, and at Lakeshore High School from 1957 – 1988. He was the first Lakeshore head coach in football, track and wrestling. Glenn was inducted into the Lakeshore Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. He loved sports and showed his support as an athletic official in football, track and wrestling for over 30 years. Glenn retired in 1988. He was on the board of directors of Berrien Teachers (Honor) Credit Union, and served on the Lake Michigan Sewer and Water Authority. Glenn enjoyed golfing, woodworking, and wine and bread making.
Glenn is survived by three children, Bruce Philip (Pat) Arter of Stevensville, Cynthia Sue (Greg) Mahler and Susan Marie (David) Puckett both of St. Joseph; five grandchildren, David Arter, Eric Mahler, Gretchen Mahler, Alison (Ben) Isbrecht and Brett Arter; five great grandchildren; and two sisters Deatra (Ron) Hathcock of Stevensville and Betty (Chris) Krziza of Niles.
Glenn was preceded by his parents; wife, Nancy, of 50 years and two weeks in 1997; and son David Arter in 2013.
