Elsie C. Maurig

Elsie Carolyn Maurig (nee Long), 98, was carried in the arms of angels into the presence of Jesus and loved ones waiting to welcome her Home, on March 11, 2013, after a brief illness. Elsie was born on February 7, 1915, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, to Emmett and Mary (Spading) Long. She married Joseph Maurig on March 24, 1942, and worked at Keeter’s Appliances in Benton Harbor for many years. Throughout her life, Elsie’s greatest joys were found in her steadfast faith in Jesus, spending time with her family and friends, watching birds at her feeders, and her beautiful knitting. She will be most fondly remembered for her wonderful cooking. She is survived by grandchildren Christine Staunton (Daniel), Connie, Brian Joseph Jr., and Marian Maurig, Lori (Chuck) Taylor, Michael (Sandra) Hurd, Jeff (Sandy) Hurd, and Tim (Jenny) Hurd. Elsie is also survived by great-grandchildren Lauren and Jenna Taylor, Ryan (Tessa) Hurd, Jennifer Lawrence, Katie Hurd, Hailey, Henry and Charlie Hurd, Jeff Maurig, Brian Joseph (Nicole) Maurig III, Stephen Maurig, Brian Koppers, Martin Cowley, Will Cowley, Aimee (Ben) Finchem, Nicole (Matthew) McCamman. Also surviving are great-great-grandchildren Nolan Hurd, William Hurd, Maddox Lawrence, Lilly Maurig, Jackson and Brodie McCamman. Elsie also leaves nieces Veronica Waryas and Mary Ann Keyser, daughter-in-law Jeanne Hurd and her sister Helen’s entire family, who have cherished her dearly all their lives. She was preceded in death by her husband, her sons Paul Hurd and Brian Joseph Maurig, two great-grandchildren, Adam Hurd and Kenny Staunton, her sister Helen Pratt, brothers Emmett and Franklin Long, and grandniece Erika Muñoz. Elsie’s Celebration of Life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church Thursday, March 14, at 1:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at noon.
