William Bertram “Bert†Smith, Jr., M.D., 83, of St. Joseph passed away December 22, 2009 at home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, December 28, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 211 Church St., St. Joseph, with Msgr. Eugene Sears as celebrant. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, St. Joseph. Friends may call Sunday, December 27, 2009 from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. with prayers recited at 4:00 P.M. at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Bert was born in Oak Park, IL on May 30, 1926 to William Bertram and Olivia (Cunningham) Smith. He graduated from high school in Tucson, AZ, and from the University of Arizona. Bert attended medical school at Loyola University in Chicago and completed his residency at the University of Illinois. Bert was in the United States Navy and served during the Korean War. Bert married Dorothea “Dot†Feeley on June 30, 1951 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in River Forest, IL. He moved to the Twin Cities in 1957 and was an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor for 32 years at Mercy-Memorial Hospital retiring in 1988. Bert was a member of Berrien Hills Country Club, enjoyed golf & tennis and was one of the founding owners of the South Shore Racquet Club. Bert was a great husband and father, touching many lives with his cheerful and positive attitude.
He is survived by his wife Dorothea, a son William Bertram “Bert†Smith, III, (fiancée Debbie Riney) of Atlanta, GA, and a sister Joan Smith Oland of Victoria British Columbia.
