Bishop John W. Young, 88 of Dowagiac, passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Lakeland Hospital in Niles.
John was born December 9, 1924 in Covington, TN. to Arthur and Joy (Harper) Young. On November 29, 1962 he married Sarah Ann Ford in Chicago, IL. He served his country during WWII in the United States Army from April 1944 to June, 1945. John spent his early years working as a Realtor and then an Insurance representative. Later on he became a Pastor and served his God and churches for over 40 years. John was a devoted husband and father and helped many people along the way. He is survived by his wife Sarah and six sons and four daughters; Clarence (Robin) Young of Pontiac, MI, Ann (Jesse) Edwards of Covington, TN, Bobby (Fran) Young of Waldorf, MD, Linda (Glenn) Baker of Covington, TN, Kathy Young of Covington, TN, John Young, Jr. of Dowagiac, Sarah (Fred) Pierce of Florence, SC, Sydney Young of Fayettville, NC, Andre (Renita) Young of Maywood, IL and Able (Kim) Young of Fayettville, NC. John also is survived by 29 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers James and Eunice and one grandson John Young, III in 2007.
A gathering of family and friends will take place on Saturday, September 27 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Apostolic Lighthouse, 30402 M-62 West in Dowagiac with a Celebration of Life Service to be held at 1:00 p.m. with Bishop Carlton Burrel of the New Vision Apostolic Church of Niles officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Dowagiac. A Repass will take place at the church in the fellowship hall following the committal service.
