Irene C. Spencer

Irene C. Spencer, 95, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend passed from this life into the arms of her Savior September 12, 2004 at the Dowagiac Nursing Home, Dowagiac, Michigan. Irene was born in Chicago, Illinois, March 31, 1909 to Peter and Helen (Danczyk) Selmer. On June 28, 1928, Irene married her beloved Roger in Chicago and treasured 58 years of a truly loving partnership. Irene loved to read and for many years was the librarian at the Watervliet Public Library before it became a district library. She also enjoyed baking; was a great cook, cross-word puzzles, playing cards, her friends, and her church, the Watervliet Methodist Church, where she was a member for over 50 years. Irene is survived by her son, Duane (Karla) Spencer of Leesburg, Florida, her daughter, Donna (Bob) Schuur of Dowagiac, Michigan, granddaughter, Laura Spencer, grandsons, Gary (Lora) Spencer, Wayne (Darla) Spencer, Adam Spencer, great-grandchildren, Olivia and Laura Starks, Jackie Spencer, Tyler Spencer, Alex Siegel, and several nieces and nephews, a sister, Virginia Powers of Lakeland, Florida and two very special people who were loving friends-Sheila Howarth of Benton Harbor, Michigan and Bessie Armstrong of the Dowagiac Nursing Home. Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Roger, son, Roger ?Tippy? Spencer, loving granddaughter, Tracey Starks, her sister Gertrude ?Peggy? Froodman and brother, Frank Selmer. Services will be held Thursday, September 16, 2004 at 1:00 PM at Watervliet Methodist Church in Watervliet with Pastor David Hills officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:30 AM until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Watervliet District Library. The family would like to thank the care-givers at the Dowagiac Nursing Home.
