Anna's Obituary
Anna Kurek, 88, of St. Joseph, passed away Thursday, October 23, 2003, at Lakeland Continuing Care Center, St. Joseph. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 3903 Lake St., Bridgman, with Fr. Raymond J. Barth officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Bridgman. Friends may call from 5-8 P.M. Thursday at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Liturgical Prayers will be recited at 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Kurek was born March 16, 1915 in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania to Theodore & Mary (Romanchek) Barna. On August 19, 1939 she married Michael Kurek in Detroit. During WWII she worked for Burrows Corp. in Detroit. Anna owned & operated Colony Party Shoppe in Dearborn for over 25 years before retiring and moving to Southwestern Michigan. Anna was a charter member of Divine Child Catholic Church in Dearborn, a founding member and officer of the Altar Society, and a volunteer for the Catholic War Veteran?s-Unit 1648 Ladies Auxiliary. Locally she attended Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Anna loved bowling, golfing, baking, gardening and Homelife Crafts.
Mrs. Kurek is survived by her husband of 64 years-Michael; two sons-Gregg Kurek of Douglas, MI, Gary (Diane) Kurek of Bridgman; two grandchildren-Jason Kurek & Erin Kurek; three sisters-Martha (Joseph) Kucharski of Dearborn Heights, MI, Aline ?Olga? Swentko of Hammond, IN, Eva Ross of Sylvania, OH, and two sister-in-laws-Helen Barna of Douglas, MI & Anne Barna of Livonia, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers-Nick Barna, Samuel ?Cy? Barna, and Michael Barna; and two sisters-Mary Cummings and Tillie Powas.
