Harry's Obituary

Harry D. Zick, 71, of Stevensville, went to meet his Lord & Savior, Thursday, December 18, 2003 with his loving family at his side. His ten year battle with ALS took his body, but not his spirit. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday at the First Church of God, 2627 Niles Ave., St. Joseph. Burial will follow at Hickory Bluff Cemetery, Stevensville. Friends may call on Sunday from 2-5 P.M. at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to ALS Foundation, First Church of God, or Hospice at Home. Those wishing to share a memory may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Mr. Zick was born August 8, 1932 in South Bend, IN to Ernest & Clara (Behling) Zick. Harry was a life-long Berrien County resident growing up in Eau Claire & Stevensville. On July 3, 1951 he married the former Shirley Menchinger in Jeffersonville, IN. Together they owned & operated Zick?s Supermarket & Catering in St. Joseph from 1961-1981. Harry was in the grocery business most of his life. Prior to owning his own grocery, he worked for Schneck?s in St. Joseph, and after retirement he helped his son Garry at Zick?s Specialty Meats in Berrien Springs, until very recently. Harry loved hunting (especially ducks), fishing, piloting his own plane, and snowplowing for several area businesses, churches, schools and friends. He had a love for life, and especially his family. He was very interested in his children?s and grandchildren?s school & sporting activities. Harry was never afraid to tackle a challenge, no matter how big or small. He was a member of the First Church of God, and a former volunteer fireman for St. Joseph Township. Harry is survived by his wife Shirley; his son Garry (Pat) Zick; two daughters-Cheryl (David) Zuhl of Grand Junction, MI, Debra (Gary) Shafer of St. Joseph; ten grandchildren-Ethan, Micah, & Emily Zuhl; Amanda, Jill, Betsy, & Kimberly Shafer; Sarah & Garrett Zick; and Katie (Jesse) Toney; one great grandson-Jesse Cole Toney; a brother-Ernest Zick of Bridgman; two sisters-Dorothy Gray of St. Joseph, Sheri (Adrick) Holt of Bradenton, FL; and numerous nieces & nephews. Harry was preceded in death by his father; his mother & step-father-Clara & Martin Schulz; a brother Arthur Zick; and an infant sister-Ruth Zick.
