George's Obituary

George Richter, 88, of Benton Harbor, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:30 A.M. Saturday at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens, Coloma. Friends may call from 6-8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Michigan Diabetes Association or the Berrien County Cancer Service. Those wishing to share a memory or sign the guest book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Mr. Richter was born February 24, 1915 in Anoka, Minnesota to Stanley & Anna (Petrowski) Richter. On August 17, 1935 he married the former Beatrice Taylor in South Bend. George was employed by Covel Manufacturing prior to joining Anstey?s Foundry in Stevensville in 1944 and retiring in 1980. He formerly served as president of the UAW Union for more than 20 years. Mr. Richter is survived by two sons-George (Margaret) Richter of Coloma, Harry (Candy) Richter of Stevensville; three daughters-Millie (Butch) Mammina of Benton Harbor, Barbara (Bill) Fredericks of Benton Harbor, Marilyn Richter of St. Joseph; sixteen grandchildren-Cheryl Kingsley, Linda Fredericks, Anthony DiMaggio, Amy DiMaggio, Joseph DiMaggio, Beth Bowie, Sheri Davey, Rob Richter, Karl Hess, Anthony, Tim, & Vince Mammina, Annette Woodfin, Joyce Richter, Mary Mantei, & Tammy Richter; ten great-grandchildren; one brother-Chet (Dorothy) Richter of Benton Harbor, and one sister-Stella Dehn of Anoka, MN. George was preceded in death by his wife Beatrice in 1982, three brothers-Harry, Paul & Frank Richter, and one sister-Mary Watters.
