Eugene's Obituary
Eugene's life began August 19, 1925 in Dowagiac, the son of Charles and Irene (Underwood) Hutchings. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was briefly detained as a POW. Eugene earned and awarded a bronze star, a purple heart and his WWII victory medal. He was united in marriage to the former Margaret Lawrence on October 6, 1950 in Decatur, MI. He worked as a quality control inspector at Sundstrand for several years. Gene was also a farmer, carpenter and construction worker. He loved to camp, especially at Oak Shores and Spring Valley Campgrounds and he enjoyed fishing. He was a former Boy Scout leader and Pathfinder leader and had belonged to the Dowagiac Moose Lodge. Gene was an avid Michigan Wolverine fan. His loving family includes his wife of 60 years Margaret Hutchings of Dowagiac, children Duwane(Carol) Hutchings of Dowagiac, David (Susan) Hutchings of Cassopolis, Dale (Pam) Hutchings of Dowagiac, Debbie (Duane) Stover of Dowagiac, and Rich (Pam) Hutchings of Niles, 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren a brother Rene (Lois) Hutchings of Joplin, MO. and a sister Beth(Gordon) Scribner of Boise, IO. Eugene passed away at his home on Friday November 5, 2010. He is preceded in death by two brothers Charles and George Hutchings. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at South Wayne Cemetery, Dowagiac were military honors will be rendered. Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to Borgess VNA and Hospice. Yazel & Clark Chapel is serving the family.
