Herbert's Obituary
Herb's life began December 25, 1923 in Dowagiac, the son of Herbert E. and Florence (Stern) Phillipson. He served his country in the United States Army Aircorps during World War II. Herb received his Jurist Doctorate in 1950 from the University Of Michigan College Of Law. He was united in marriage to the former Dorothy Reasoner on August 24, 1952 in Goshen. Dorothy preceded Herb in death in 1979. He was the united in marriage to the former Ada-Eve Sztankay on July 5, 1981 in Dowagiac. Herb and Eve loved to travel and share their journeys with others. They opened their home to many and were always generous hosts. Herb served his community in more ways that can be mentioned. He wrote the city charter of Dowagiac, he served as the Cass Co. Prosecutor, and as Cass County Probate Judge. His loving family includes his wife Eve Phillipson of Dowagiac, his children Jane Phillipson- Wilson of Dowagiac, Richard (Anne) Phillipson of Ovid, MI, Thomas (Margaret) Phillipson of Kalamazoo, John (Sue) Williamson of St. Louis, Claudia Ann Callaghan of Shoreview, MN, and James (Mina) Williamson of Fortuna, CA, grandchildren Kea Wilson, Rich Phillipson, Emma Phillipson, James Williamson, Kate Williamson, Orion Callaghan, Zoli Callaghan, Sara Callaghan, Zoli Williamson and Michelle Williamson, his brother Irving S. (Alma) Phillipson of Naples, FL, their adopted exchange “sons†Mario Marzani of Bergamo, Italy, Dr. Juan Gargiulo of Long Island, NY, Walkmar Santos of Fortaleza, Brazil and “daughter†Cleide Munroe of Windermere, FL. Herb passed away on Monday September 27, 2010 at Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital. His family will gather with friends on Thursday from 5-9 p.m. at Yazel & Clark Chapel where his funeral service will held on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Dowagiac First United Methodist Church led by Pastor John Kasper. He will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to the Southwest Michigan College Foundation.
