Madeleine Krieger Smith, 99, formerly of St. Joseph, died March 11, 2019 at Woodland Terrace, Bridgman, MI. Madeleine was born April 22, 1919, in Stevensville, MI, the older daughter and third child of Julius J. Krieger, Jr., and Theresa Keller Krieger. She married Douglas Washburn Smith on May 22, 1943 in St. Joseph, who predeceased her on March 18, 2008.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 10:30 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 211 Church St., St. Joseph. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, March 15, 2019 from 5 PM until 7 PM with a prayer service beginning at 7 PM at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Madeleine’s name may be directed to Birthright of St. Joseph, or to the James K. Smith Memorial Scholarship, care of the Lake Michigan Catholic School. Madeleine graduated from Michigan State University in 1942 with a B.A. in Home Economics, and occasionally taught high-school courses as a substitute. She and Doug maintained residences at Sister Lakes, MI, and New Port Richey, FL.
Madeleine was preceded in death by her son, James K. Smith. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Michael (Clara) Smith of Chelsea, MI, Andrew (Beatrice) Smith of Lasne, Belgium, and Jeffrey (Janet) Smith of St. Joseph; daughter, Dr. Paula (Jan) Smith of Kitchener, Ontario; daughter-in-law, Martha Meeling Smith of Niles, MI; grandchildren, Michelle (Thomas) Schroeder, Melissa (Lance) Aldrich, Melody (Michael) Patterson, Quinn (Tera) Smith, Dr. EmmaLeigh Smith, Cary (P. J.) Hoffman, Breann (John) Farstvedt, Amber Smith, Dr. Ashley (Joseph) Anderson, Joffrey (Maria) Smith, Joanna Smith, Zachary (Jennifer) Smith, Margaret (Ruben) Lagunas, Justin (Tricia) Smith, and Julie (Jake) Martin; and 29 great-grandchildren.
