Derrick's Obituary
Derrick Owens Carroll, 40, of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of South Haven, died Thursday, July 21, 2011 in Texas.
He was born August 9, 1970 to Thomas and Odessa Carroll in South Haven, Michigan. Derrick was baptized at Emmanuel Community Church where he was a longtime member. He attended school in Bangor, South Haven and Benton Harbor, Michigan where he graduated in 1989. Derrick joined the U. S. Army in 1989, he enlisted as an artillerymen (13B), and was assigned to an airborne infantry unit. His rank was SSG/E6. His tour of duties include – Desert Shield, Desert Storm and the Iraq Freedom I & II. After serving 15 years, Derrick was honorably retired for medical reasons. Derrick was also a Mason belonging to New Bethel Lodge of Benton Harbor, Michigan.
He is preceded in death by his father – Thomas Carroll Sr. and his son – Teshann D. Goss.
He is survived by his wife – Yvonne Carroll of Florida. Five sons – Derrick Jr., Owen, Isiah, Elijah, and Nigel. Two daughters – Jasmine and Taylor. Grandchildren – Kalazia, Namiya and Nevaeh. Brothers – Jerry Kimble of Georgia, Thomas (Barbara) Carroll Jr., Bobby Carroll, Jerry Carroll, Raymond (Sharon) Carroll and Maris (Detrice) Carroll all of Chicago, Illinois. Sisters – Joans Eva Kimble of South Haven, Michigan, Rhonda Young of Virginia, Debra (Donald) Booker of Benton Harbor, Michigan, Gloria Dean Jones, Geraldine (Derrick) Anderson and Brenda (Dennis) Pettis all of Chicago, Illinois. A host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A special play brother – Chico and special play son – Marlon Williams.
Wake will be from 9:30 – 10:30 on Saturday, July 30 at the Emmanuel Community Church in South Haven. Funeral services will begin Saturday at the church at 10:30 A.M. with Pastor Maurice Harley officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
