George Robert (Bob / Smitty the Gas Man) Smith, 73, died Thursday, Feb. 7th, 2008 at the Orlando Regional Medical Hospital following a short illness.
He was born April 27th, 1934 in South Haven, Michigan to Ernest and Gertrude (Sontag) Smith, who preceded him in death. He served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War. Bob retired from Michigan Gas Utilities in 1998 after 34 years of service.
Bob is survived by his wife of 50 years, Beverly (Wilsey), his daughters, Shirley (Bruce) Torp and MaryAnn Frazier of South Haven and JoEllen (Brian) Smith of Lugoff SC. He also leaves behind 6 grandchildren, Chris and Rachel Torp, Shane and Nathan Frazier, Casey and Eric Moschioni. Also surviving are his three sisters, Shirley Jillson, Margaret (Arthur) Andrews and Patsy (Huram) Lockwood all of South Haven.
He was a member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church, South Haven American Legion Post #49, South Haven Moose Lodge #697 and past member of the South Haven Steelheaders.
He enjoyed camping with his grandchildren, playing cribbage, and carving fish. His love of fishing took him from Canada to Mexico, Seattle to Nova Scotia. Wherever there was water, he wanted to fish it.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the South Haven Steelheaders, P.O. Box 107, South Haven, MI 49090.
