Leslie Irwin's Obituary

Leslie Irwin Starks, 82, of South Haven died Tuesday, July 25 at Lakeside Vista and Villas Hospice in Holland, Michigan.

He was born March 13, 1924 in South Haven, Michigan to Irwin Leslie and Marjorie Helen (Dawe) Starks. He graduated from South Haven High School. Leslie married Rosemary Nelson on September 20, 1947. After her death he then married Eleanore Bates on January 5, 1985. He served his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Leslie worked as an assistant supervisor for the Michigan Fruit Canners, he was a mechanic at Koch’s Shell and ADD Construction as well as for James Raymond Buick, Pontiac. Leslie was a member of the Hope Reformed Church in South Haven and the We All Come Back Club.

He is preceded in death along with his parents by his first wife – Rosemary Starks who died in 1983 and his brother – Chester Starks.

He is survived by his wife – Eleanore Starks of South Haven. Children – John Starks of Lake Placid, Florida, Judith (Joseph) Gargano of Watervliet, Michigan and Nancy (Robert Jr.) Torstenson of South Haven, Michigan. Step-children – Marilynn (James) VanderKolk and Robert (Kathy) Bates. Grandchildren – Timothy Starks of Texas, Trisha Torstenson of Otsego, Michigan, Sean Torstenson of South Haven, Michigan and Amber Gargano of Detroit. Step-grandchildren – Brian (Kerry) VanderKolk, Julie (Scott) Vincent, Jeff (Adrienne) Bates, Erin (Zac) Altman and Timothy Bates. Great Grandchildren – Abby, Alec, Brandon, Colten, Trevor and Taylor. Step-Great Grandchildren – Bella, Grace, Josaiah and Alison. Sister- Jean (Starks) Lauman of South Haven. Aunt Eleanor (Dawe) Claflin of South Haven also survives.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 27 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday at 10:00 A.M. at Hope Reformed Church with Pastor Curry Pakkaart officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Hope Reformed Church Youth Ministry.
