Richard "Lou" Louis's Obituary

Richard L. “Lou” Niles, age 80, of Holland formerly of South Haven, died peacefully surrounded by his family Sunday, June 4, 2006 at his home in Holland. He was born February 24, 1926 in South Haven, MI to Lucius and Alice (Zeedyk) Niles. Lou was a South Haven High School graduate in 1943. In high school Lou played football and baseball for the Rams. He married Leonarda Podgorny on October 12, 1946 at the First United Methodist Church in South Haven. Lou worked at Sherman Dairy in South Haven and later managed the Michigan Shore Lumber Company in South Haven. After retiring and moving to Holland Lou worked at Vogelzang Hardware. Lou was a former member of the South Haven Kiwanis Club. He is a member of the South Haven Elks Lodge #1509 and was a past Exulted Ruler. He was also a member of the American Legion in South Haven Post #49. Lou served his country in the Navy during World War II. Lou also loved to golf and fish.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lucious and Alice Niles. His grand parents, Corstiaan and Lena Zeedyk. Also by two sisters – Helen Morehead and Marge Powers.

He is survived by his wife, Leonarda Niles of Holland. Three sons – Lou (Gloria) Niles of Portland, Oregon. Larry (Stacy) Niles of Lawrence, Michigan and Lonny (Cindy) Niles of South Haven, Michigan. Five grand children – Kevin (Kathy) Niles, Jennifer (Eric) White, Joseph (Amanda) Niles, Ashli Niles and Justin Lintner. Four great grand children – Tyler and Sarah Niles & Joseph and Lucie White. One brother, Jack (Wanda) Niles of South Haven, Michigan.

Visitation will be Friday, June 9, from 2 to 3 PM at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home. Memorial services will begin at 3:00 PM at the funeral home with Rev. John Fisher officiaiting. Military Honors will be presented by the American Legion and VFW Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Holland.
