Shirley's Obituary

Shirley Hansen, 84, of West Bloomfield, Michigan died Sunday, December 22, 2013 at the Waterford Oaks Nursing Home. She was born July 18, 1929 in Oak Park, Illinois.   Prior to her illness this spring, she resided in South Haven, Michigan during the summer and Juno Beach, Florida in the winter.

Shirley is survived by her son – Steve (Diza) Grines of Hide-a-way Hills, Ohio; Four daughters – Joyce (Lloyd) Anderson of Hager City, Wisconsin, Lorelei Grines of Coldwater, Michigan, Cindy Grines of West Bloomfield, Michigan and Lynnette Grines of San Diego, California.  Five grandchildren, Kirby, Jessica, Derek, Luke and Zack, also survive.

Her father, Philip Hinkey, was a printer in Chicago and a business owner.  Her mother, Irene Hansa, was a housewife.

Shirley grew up in the Chicago area and moved to New Mexico and then Michigan after she married. She also lived in California for several years as well as Ohio and Florida.   Shirley loved living by the water and especially enjoyed watching the sea animals frolic.

She raised five rambunctious children and then worked as an administrative assistant, collection agent and realtor over the years.
Shirley loved to dress to the hilt.  She had closets full of outfits, shoes and purses. She was well know for spending lots of time primping and was referred to on occasion as a Jackie Onassis knock off. In addition to her fashion collection, Shirley was fastidious about her lavender Softsoap, face cream, and Blistex chapstick. She always strived to look her best when out on the town and her family even regularly impersonates her famous ‘Shirley pose’.

One of Shirley’s other favorite activities was eating. She would spend hours at the grocery store carefully choosing her produce and other products to return home to indulge in her spread. Her appetite was one of a kind.  Other interests included reading, watching old movies, shopping, and taking care of her cat Baby Linx and more recently her dog Cuddles.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Jan. 11, from  12:30 p.m. until the time of the service at the First United Methodist Church of South Haven.  Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the church with Pastor Devon Herrell officiating. Shirley will be laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery in South Haven.
