Mary's Obituary

Mary Margaret Burr, 95, of South Haven, Michigan, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the River Ridge Retirement Community where she has resided for the past eight years. She was born December 24, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois to Joseph and Margaret Stanton. She was adopted at an early age by Daisy Ulrey of Plymouth, Indiana. In 1936, she graduated from the Kellogg Agricultural High School in Hickory Corners, Michigan. She married W. Robert Burr on July 3, 1937 in Auburn, Indiana. They remained married for 65 years until his passing in 2002. Mary was a dedicated bridge player and tended to prolific flower and vegetable gardens. She was an avid seamstress making many of her own and her young son’s clothes. She made countless baby quilts for Church World Services. For over 20 years, she was a Sunday School teacher at the Church of the Brethren in Battle Creek, Michigan. Mary resided in Battle Creek for 66 years and wintered in Sun City West, Arizona for over 20 years. She was a member of the Lakeview Baptist Church in Battle Creek, Michigan and was active in the Sun City American Baptist Church in Sun City, Arizona.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Margaret, and her husband W. Robert Burr. She is survived by her son and his wife, Robert and Patricia Burr and their daughter, Kelley Burr of South Haven, Michigan.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at East Hickory Corners Cemetery with Reverend Adam Metzger officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lakeview Baptist Church of Battle Creek or South Haven’s Hospice at Home.
