Betty's Obituary
Betty Ann Schewe, 84, of South Haven, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born November 5, 1931 to Ferdinand and Anna Haingl in Chicago, Illinois. Betty attended St. Philomena School in Chicago and graduated from their business program. She married Arthur Schewe in 1952, a union that lasted 52 years until his death in 2004. They lived in Chicago for a few years after they married and then moved to South Haven where they resided for the remainder of their lives. Betty worked at the Karlov Dress Shop in Chicago, which was owned by her mother, and at several jobs as a secretary, including her husband’s business, Arctic Air Refrigeration. She was a member of St. Basil Catholic Church in South Haven and was active in the Women’s Service Guild. Betty loved to sing, and sang in the children’s and adult choir at St. Philomena Church in Chicago and in the choir at St. Basil Church. She also enjoyed reading immensely and knitting. Betty volunteered at several organizations in the South Haven community over the years, such as the South Haven Center for the Arts, Michigan Maritime Museum, South Haven Historical Association, We Care I.N.C., and the South Haven Community Hospital Auxiliary.
Her siblings – Barbara, Rudolph, and William Haingl, precede her in death along with her husband and parents.
Surviving are her children – David (Robin) Schewe of Naples, Florida, Katherine (Steven) Douglas of Bangor, and Victoria (David) Henry of South Haven. Seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren also survive.
The family will meet friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home in South Haven. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 15, 2016 at the St. Basil Catholic Church with Rev. Father Robert Flickinger officiating. Betty will be laid to rest at the Lakeview Cemetery in South Haven. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to South Haven’s Hospice at Home or St. Basil Catholic Church’s “Restore the Glory” renovation fund.
