Douglas's Obituary

Douglas Wattrick, 82, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2017.  Doug was born January 19, 1935 in Muskegon to Arthur C. and Isabelle Bolthouse Wattrick.  He attended Muskegon Heights High School but graduated from Muskegon High in 1953.  He attended Muskegon Community College but soon entered the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Germany.  After the army he went to Michigan State, graduating in 1958.  He taught school in Grand Haven for one year before returning the Michigan State to earn his M.B.A.  He married Lorraine Buelow in South Haven on August 15, 1958.  Doug has lived in South Haven for over 57 years.  In 1960 he joined Whirlpool Corporation where he retired in 1994.  In his last years at Whirlpool, Doug worked in the International Division.  Doug traveled all over the world including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia and Europe.  After retiring from Whirlpool, Doug worked doing market research for Smith Dahmer.  He continued with international travel in this role.


Doug was a very active member of Peace Lutheran Church.  He served in many roles over the years.  He was chair of the church centennial in 2001.  Doug was also a member of the South Haven City Council.  He was a member when ground was broken for the present city hall.  Doug always believed in public service.  He volunteered and served as legal guardian for many individuals


Doug will be remembered by friends and family for his sense of humor, his helpful attitude, and for the countless projects that he completed over the years.  Doug had very good carpenter skills which were honed over the years.


Doug was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter in-law Susan Wattrick.  He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, sister, Shirley Olah of Muskegon and sons Steven of Atlanta, Kenneth of South Haven, and James (Erika) of Cincinnati, six grandchildren and one great granddaughter.  A  Memorial Service will be held at Peace Lutheran Church on Wednesday, June 28, at 11:00 A.M. 


A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Haven with Pastor Travis Wilson officiating. Contributions may be made in Doug’s memory to the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 06321 Blue Star Highway, South Haven, Michigan 49090.
