Jack's Obituary

 

John “Jack” Harbin, 81, of South Haven, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Bronson Hospital in South Haven. He was born January 27, 1936 to Russell and Vilma (Nehrke) Harbin in South Haven. Jack married Mary Jean Allers on June 18, 1955 and shared 58 years of marriage before her passing in 2013.  He earned an Associate’s Degree at Ferris State College in Auto Mechanics.  Jack was a member of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Michigan National Guard.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, vintage bikes – Cushman Scooters and his 1965 Mustang.  He also enjoyed drinking coffee with his friends at Captain Nemo’s every morning.

He is preceded in death along with his parents, wife, and sister, Muriel Vanderbeek.

Jack is survived by his children – Terri (Nicholas) Ilg of South Haven, Jeanine (Kirk) Hoffman of Jackson, Michigan, and Kathy VandeWouwer of Kalamazoo, grandchildren -  Kristan VandeWouwer, and Kaitlyn (Nate) VanHaren and Alysa Hoffman, two great grandchildren – Liam Adrian and Levi John VanHaren, and companion, Ginnie Nagy.  Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, January 19, 2017 at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home in South Haven.  Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 20, 2017, at 11:00 AM at the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Haven with Pastor Travis Wilson officiating. Jack will be laid to rest at McDowell Cemetery in Casco Township. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jack’s memory to the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 06321 Blue Star Highway, South Haven, Michigan 49090, the American Diabetes Association, 2451 Crystal Drive, Suite 900, Arlington, VA 22202, or to the American Heart Association, 208 LaSalle St. Ste 1500, Chicago, IL 60604-1242.
