Gerald's Obituary

Gerald Edwin Ransom, 77, died peacefully on Saturday, August 24, 2019 in South Haven, Michigan.

Gerald was a lifelong resident of South Haven, born on December 2, 1941 to Odis and Margaret (Kniebes) Ransom. He graduated from South Haven High School in 1960.

On September 30, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara (Bolden). They have spent nearly 59 loving years together. He adored her and they could always be found next to each other, holding hands.

Gerald and Barbara have four children. Lauri (Joe) Stickel of South Haven, Brenda (Herb) Marshall of Calgary, Alberta, Mark Ransom of South Haven and Marci (Jim) Sweat of Venice, Florida. Their family has grown to include twelve grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Gerald was an only child, but his cousins were very special to him, like brothers and sisters.

After high school Gerald began working for the family business, Ransom Brothers Painting and Decorating. His artistic talent made him a natural at painting and decorating both homes and businesses. When his uncles retired, he and his cousin, Dwight Ransom took over the business. Gerald retired in 2004.

Gerald loved to fix things, he liked to “leave things better than when he found them.” He had an appreciation for classic and model cars. He enjoyed his 1953 Buick Deluxe, a gift from his children upon his retirement.

He loved the South Haven lighthouse and sunsets on Lake Michigan. Like a lighthouse, Gerald has been a beacon and a pillar to both his natural and spiritual families. He was kind and loved to see the good in others – always with a smile and word of encouragement.

Visitation will be Saturday, August 31, 2019 from 12 noon to 1:00 PM at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home.  The funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM at the funeral home with Greg Harger and Mark Peters officiating.  Gerald will be laid to rest at McDowell Cemetery in Casco Township.  A luncheon will be provided by the family following the burial. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 200 Turwill Lane, Suite 6, Kalamazoo, MI  49006.
