Arthur J. “Art” Lamport, 92, of New Buffalo, passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at Franciscan Health, Michigan City, IN. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 25 at 1 PM at Sommerfeld Chapel, 15 N. Barton St., New Buffalo. Friends may visit with the family from 11 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home. A private family burial will be held at a later date at Pine Grove Cemetery. Art was born on April 16, 1930, in New Buffalo, to Joseph & Emma (Rohder) Lamport. He graduated from New Buffalo High School in 1949. Art began working for Chessie System Railroad as an engineer, following his father and three uncles before him who were engineers for Pere Marquette. After 41 years of hard work and dedication, he celebrated a well-earned retirement from CSX Transportation. On June 30, 1978, Art married the love of his life Judith “Judy” Deahl, in Harbert, MI. Being a lifelong resident, Art had a very strong connection to his New Buffalo community. He served 8 years on the New Buffalo School Board with 2 as president, was a past president of the New Buffalo Railroad Museum, and was active on the New Buffalo Township Board for many years. He was also a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge.

Art took great joy in tending to his garden and orchard, planning for his harvest even this spring. He was an enthusiastic Michigan football fan, remembering his trip to the 1999 Rose Bowl with Adam as a lifetime highlight. His love of trains continued into his retirement, taking shape in vast and varied collections. He was a family baker of birthday cakes for several years, delighted to suit the individual tastes of each family member. However, what Art loved most was spending time with his family, particularly his granddaughters. From cheering them on during team sports to teaching the finer points of cribbage, he thoroughly enjoyed watching them grow up. Art was a dependable and supportive family man, and he will be truly missed.

Art is survived by his wife, Judy; daughter, Lori, and son-in-law, Gregory White (Ruth and Charlotte) of South Bend; and daughter-in-law, Leanne Lamport (Libby and Addy) of New Buffalo. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Adam Lamport.
