Betsy Jane's Obituary
Betsy Jane Good passed away on March 6, 2025 as a result of complications from living with Type 1 diabetes. She was one of a kind. Diagnosed at 14 years old with juvenile diabetes, Betsy was told her life expectancy would be thirty years of age. Through sheer grit and advances in diabetes research, Betsy well outlived that prediction, though the disease wore at her constantly. She used her razor-sharp humor and lightning wit to find levity in trying times and jumped at chances to travel or try new things despite physical or medical constraints, embodying the phrase “live every moment like it will be your last.”
Born March 18, 1951, she was the youngest child in her family, blessed with large, dark-brown eyes that her father affectionately called “root-beer eyes.” When Betsy’s sisters came home from school, they taught their reading and writing lessons to their precocious sister. This began Betsy’s early love for learning and she signed her first library card at the age of three. Graduating early from Holly High School in 1968, she later received higher education degrees from Oakland University and the University of Michigan.
As a mental health therapist for the State of Michigan and Genesee County, Betsy was gifted in working with individuals with cognitive and behavioral challenges. As a musician playing numerous instruments, she found life-long friendships in community concert bands, theater productions and church choirs. You could find her gardening, shopping, antiquing or winning just about every trivia game she played. Betsy was unapologetically outspoken about her values and political beliefs.
She adored visiting friends or entertaining and her baking was legendary, always making too much so everyone had leftovers. Cats were a passion and she adopted many over the years, naming most after favorite musicians. Betsy delighted in spoiling children as they were truly the light of her life. She spent her last years in Saugatuck, MI, a time she deeply treasured. To be friends with her was to be her family and she had a large network of friends that enriched her days and undoubtedly added years to her life.
The family would like to thank Allegan County Medical Care Facility and Holland Hospice for their remarkable and compassionate care.
Betsy is preceded in death by her father and mother Lloyd and Ruth (Brace) Good, her niece Megan Ashby and brother-in-law Doug Sharp. She is survived by her sisters Gaye (Good) Ashby (William) and Joye (Good) Sharp, her nephew Kyle Ashby (Janelle), her niece Brooke Frommeyer (Jeffrey), great nieces Kaitlyn Ashby and Alison Frommeyer, and great nephew Jack Frommeyer as well as many beloved friends.
There will be a Celebration of Betsy’s life planned for this summer, with a date forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Joslin Diabetes Center.
