Carlton Cook “Hutch” Hutchinson January 1, 1923 - October 18, 2021
Carlton Hutchinson, 98, went home to be with his Lord on October 18, 2021 at Crownpointe Senior Living Community, Stevensville, MI. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 11:00 am Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Napier Parkview Baptist Church, 245 W. Napier Ave, Benton Harbor. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph, with Military Rites conducted by the North Berrien Military Rites Team. Friends may visit with the family at Starks & Menchinger Chapel , 2650Niles Rd., St. Joseph on Friday, October 22, 2021, from6:00 - 8:00 pm. and at Napier Parkview Baptist Church on Saturday at 10:00am.
Carlton Hutchinson was born in Akron, NY to Chartley D. and Olive(Cook) Hutchinson. Carlton was married to Grace Detwiler (originally Detweiler) in Clarence Center, New York on Feb. 2, 1946.
He graduated from Akron High School (NY) in 1940and attended Bowling Green State University. before enlisting in the US Navy in Dec. 1942. Following officers training, as an ensign, he served aboard the destroyer USS Gleaves in the Pacific and later was assigned to the USS Hickox.
In 1947 he earned his BS degree in math and industrial arts and his Masters degree in 1951 from BGSU. He earned his Education Specialist degree in 1969 at Eastern Michigan University. He was a lifelong educator and served in the following capacities: teacher and coach in Grand Rapids, OH; superintendent of Jackson Twp. Schools, OH; superintendent of Savannah Clear Creek Butler Schools, OH; principal of Madison High School, OH (where he and staff built a new high school); superintendent of Dexter Schools, MI; and principal of Fairplain Jr. High in Benton Harbor, MI.
Later he returned to his first love of teaching math, until he retired from full time teaching in 1984. He then taught math in the Adult Education program for 12 years in Benton Harbor until his full retirement in 1996 at age 73, making a total of 49 years devoted to education.
In the same year Hutch and Grace celebrated their 50th anniversary, going on to enjoy 66 full years of marriage.
Carlton was an avid stamp and coin collector, and enjoyed making projects in his workshop. He was active in Napier Parkview Baptist Church, serving as teacher, moderator, and deacon, and recorded the church history of baptisms and memberships.
Carlton is survived by his children: Cheryl (Ronald) Perrine, Durward Hutchinson, Jay(Marla) Hutchinson, Linda Bailey (Bill Winans), and daughter-in-law Nancy (Schultz) Hutchinson; his grandchildren, Karen (Dennis) Francis, Mark (Darlene)Perrine, Mike (Julie) Perrine, Ryan Hutchinson, Eric (Allison) Hutchinson, Allisa (Andrew) Savery, Matt (Jennifer) Hutchinson; and 19 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace, his parents, five brothers, Durward, Robert, Chartley M., Donald and Allen, son-in-law Kim Bailey, and two great grandsons, Gideon and Isaac Hutchinson.
