Carol's Obituary

Carol A. Dombkowski, 83, of Sister Lakes, passed away early Wednesday morning, August 27, 2025, at Corewell Health Merlin & Carolyn Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville, MI.

She was born on November 29, 1941, in New Lenox, IL, the daughter of Walter and Iona (Kitzerow) Ruthenbeck. Carol graduated from Lincoln-Way High School in 1959.

Carol lived a life rooted in love, hard work, and generosity. She married Robert Dombkowski, her husband of more than 35+ years, who preceded her in death on March 2, 2004. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Glenn Ruthenbeck.

Carol made her home in Sister Lakes, where she enjoyed the peace of the water and tending to her garden. She also loved to cook and had a way of making sure no one ever left her kitchen hungry. Whether it was family, or Rob and his friends, she could put together a meal on a moment’s notice—and plenty of it. Her Polish chicken and noodles were legendary, but more than that, her meals were a reflection of her love and care for those around her.

Those who knew Carol will also remember her strong spirit—she was a spit fire, full of energy, and proudly stubborn when it came to standing her ground. That determination, mixed with her generous heart, made her both unforgettable and deeply loved.

Above all, Carol cherished time with her son Rob, and her grandchildren, Connor and Kylie, who brought her endless pride and happiness. She never hesitated to lend a helping hand and will be remembered for her caring spirit and generosity.

Surviving are her son, Rob (Kristy) Dombkowski; grandchildren, Connor and Kylie Dombkowski; and her sister-in-law, Karen Ruthenbeck.

A service to celebrate Carol’s life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 31, at Clark Chapel-Starks Family Funeral Homes, 405 Center St., Dowagiac, where friends may visit with her family from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will follow in Keeler Cemetery, Hartford.
