Charles's Obituary

Charles Alex Soukup, Jr., known to his friends and family as Charley, passed away on February 28 at his home in South Haven, Michigan. He was born in the same town in which he died and where
he lived most of his life.

He is survived by his brother, Robert Soukup and wife Sharon (Gordon), niece Lauren (Soukup) Tomlinson, and nephew Brad Soukup; the former Kathleen Spratt and their two daughters, Jennifer Jane (husband Tom Kalczuk and their children, Maggie and Andrew) and Lisbeth Christine (husband Mike McGregor and their children, Thomas and Cassandra); and the former Amanda Evans and their two children, Ramey Rebecca and Charles Alex Soukup III. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Alex Soukup, Sr. and Harriette (Placek) Soukup and his nephew, Steven Soukup.

Charley held a deep fondness for books, reading, and knowledge, a trait he cultivated and encouraged in his children. Nature was another passion he embraced wholeheartedly. He loved hunting and fishing, hobbies he shared especially with his son, brother, nephews, and friends. Going into The Boy Scouts and achieving the highest honor of Eagle Scout in 1962, he found solace in nature, a quality he shared with all who knew him. After graduating from SH High School, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University in 1970. Go Green!

He then began working in video production, soon starting his own video company, "Video Talk," and travelled throughout the USA for ten years producing a wide variety of video programs, including one for PBS on the underwater three-year archeological documentary of the shipwreck “Rockaway,” a 100 year-old schooner discovered just north of South Haven’s harbor.

Charley lived a rich and fulfilling life, including serving as a Lieutenant in the MI Army National Guard, working for twenty-five years in administration services for the then SH Community Hospital, and serving as a member and one-year President for the SH Rotary Club.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His family will do their best to respect a final wish of his of guys on stilts strutting down the road towards the beach and the trombones echoing from the lakeshore.

A private family service is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated and can be sent to Doctors Without Borders, the local We Care pantry, and/or your favorite mental health charity.
