David's Obituary

On Sunday, February 19, 2023, David Jack Hess, 69, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. David was born on January 23, 1954, to Jack and Mary Louise (Zupke) Hess.

David graduated from Buchanan High School in 1973 and from there opened and operated Red Bud Chimney Sweeps for over 30 years. During those years David served as a mentor and friend to two very special employees, Rick Phillips, and Jeremiah Koch.

David served as a volunteer firefighter for Buchanan City Fire Department for 28 years, retiring as Assistant Chief. David helped construct the Firehouse Park Memorial honoring the 150-year celebration of the fire department.

David had a deep love for his family. Especially his grandchildren, he enjoyed watching their sporting events and being a part of all school activities. His other hobbies included camping, golfing, being the family jokester, and spending time with his three closest friends Steve, Mike, and Larry, together they spelled trouble.

David is survived by his wife of nearly 20 years, Marcia (Fox) Hess, and his children Chad (Amanda) Hess of Granger, Ind., Brett (Jennifer) Busick of Kingsley, Mich., and Aimee (Odie) Williams, of Stevensville, Mich. Five grandchildren, Madelyn (Micheal) Frank, Paige Hess, Cole Busick, Brennan Busick, and Hailey Hess. One great-grandson Mikey Frank. Two sisters, Sandy (Ron) Morris of Grand Ledge, Mich., and Janet Cooper of St. Joseph, Mich., and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Mary Louise (Zupke) Hess, and his sister Jackie Graves.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Swem Chapel, 301 W. Front St., Buchanan. Visitation take place two hours prior from 11-1 also at the funeral home. All memorial contributions can be made to Honor Credit Union where a memorial account has been established in David’s memory (Account # 171817) for purchasing a bench at Firehouse Park and Storyline, where David enjoyed worshiping.
