David's Obituary
Mr. David Holmes was born on January 20, 1957, to Violet Holmes and Frank Burkitt in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Mr. Holmes moved from New Orleans, Louisiana with his mother to Benton Harbor Michigan where he completed his formative education. Dave, David, big brother and husband, as he was called by family and friends confessed his hope in Christ Under the leadership of Bishop Howard Thomas who preceded him in death and Pastor Rufus Young who was a constant spiritual teacher, whom David loved. David loved his church Tabernacle Church of God in Christ in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
Mr. Holmes was a United States Army Veteran, stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey. David received an Honorable discharge in 1985. He was awarded a medal in Marksman M16.
David (working Dave) was a hard-working man. At times he held two jobs. David owned and worked his Janitor service, where he steamed cleaned restaurant kitchens in the Berrien Country Area. He was a printer by trade. He worked at Patterson Printing in Benton Township and later for the Herald Palladium in St. Joseph, Michigan, where he retired after working twenty-nine years. David worked in his off hours from the Herald Palladium as a part-time clerk at Joe’s Mini Mart.
David continued to work after retirement. He worked part-time at Covert Housing Commission as a maintenance man. He later worked part-time for Starks Family Funeral Home, Filbrandt Chapel in South Haven Michigan. He also went back to work for the Herald Palladium. He continued to work there until his health began to fail.
David was united in Holy Matrimony to Shirley Allums of Covert, Michigan, although no children were born to this union. They combined their children into one family. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Shirley Ann Holmes, his mother Violet Strickland, Tacoma, Washington and his children; Marie Louise Young-Daniels who preceded him in death, Calvin (Nichole) Hill, Benton Harbor, Michigan, Tameilia (Anthony) Bruce-Boswell, Indianapolis, Indiana, Dejuan D. James, Benton Harbor, Michigan, Khamisi (Anthony) Holmes-Butler, Ruskin, Florida, Dennis Allums, Las Vegas, Nevada. His sisters; Antionett Bailey who preceded him in death, Carol Crump, Ophelia Crump, Monique Crump, North Carolina, Mary Crump, Wilma [(Jeanie) Anthony) Espinosa, His brother; Leonard Strickland all from Tacoma, Washinton, His aunts; Wilmina Johnson, Texas, Elvira Washington, Kenner, Louisiana and Hope Moor who preceded him in death. Grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends who will truly miss him.
A Wake for David will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025, at the Tabernacle Church of God in Christ in Benton Harbor from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the Celebration of Life Service at 1:00 p.m. where Pastor Rufus Young will officiate. David will be laid to rest at Covert Cemetery.
