Donald Gene Zelmer, 77, of Niles, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Buchanan American Legion, Post 51. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.swemchapel.com.

Don was born on May 19, 1948, to Emiel and Marie (Schmaltz) Zelmer in Benton Harbor, MI. He graduated from Buchanan High School, class of 1966 where he was a standout wrestler. After graduation, Don enlisted in the United States Navy in 1967. He proudly served aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42) and was honorably discharged in 1970, receiving the National Defense Service Medal for his service.

Don’s professional life was defined by hard work, self-reliance, and extraordinary skill. He began his career driving truck, quickly earning a reputation for his ability to haul heavy steel loads with confidence and precision. In the early 1980’s, he founded D & J Truck & Trailor on 3rd Street in Niles. For nearly forty years, Don owned and operated the business, becoming widely known for his craftsmanship, mechanical talent, and the pride he put into every job. His generosity was equally well-known. Don never hesitated to lend a hand, offer advice, or help someone get back on the road.

On July 20, 2002, Don married Kay Horvath at Leeper Park in South Bend, Indiana.

Don was also an exceptional builder. From homes to additions and countless projects in between, he built, and helped build, more than most could imagine. Nearly everything on his own property was crafted by his hands. He loved hunting, fishing, and anything with an engine, and he especially enjoyed time spent “up north” at the family property, snowmobiling and riding the side-by-side.

Above all, Don loved being with his family and friends. Some of his happiest moments were the simple ones; good company, a football game on, and time spent together in his barrage.

Don is survived by his wife, Kay Zelmer; son, Bryon (Kristy) Zelmer; son-in-law, Brian Harkey; grandchildren, Kendra (Matthew) Hempton, Lorraine Osborne, Joshua (Grace) Osborne and Gabriel (Kendall) Harkey; great-grandchildren, Mateo, Emilia, Kolby, Kayce and brother, Dick (Jane) Zelmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emiel and Marie Zelmer and daughter, Marlene Harkey
