Emma's Obituary

Emma C. Brown, 96, of Decatur, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, October 31, 2025, at The Timbers of Cass County in Dowagiac, Michigan.

Born on January 31, 1929, in Callahan, Florida, Emma was the youngest of nine children of the late Arthur and Ethel (Johnson) Jones. She received her formal Education in Callahan Florida and in later years after moving to Philadelphia, PA, Emma enrolled in Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, where she matriculated in Special Education. Emma later moved to Decatur, MI, where she taught children with special needs until her retirement. After retirement, she spent quality time with her great-grandchildren, Beryl III and "Lil" Emma.

A devoted member of First Baptist Church in Decatur, Emma faithfully served as treasurer for many years and contributed to numerous church activities and ministries. Her warm, infectious smile and kind heart touched all who knew her. Emma also had a remarkable green thumb and took great pride in her plants, nurturing them with the same care and love she showed to everyone around her.

Emma is survived by her grandson, Beryl Brown II; two great-grandchildren, Beryl Brown III and Emma Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Beryl Brown; two daughters, Sharon Brown and Berlynda Brown; her parents; and her eight brothers and sisters, Helen Jones-Hill (Adolph), Ophelia Jones-Morgan (Alvin), George Jones (Magnolia), Marion Jones-Jackson (Alfred), Aaron Jones (Misty Mae), Robert Jones, Samuel Jones (Rachel), and Lucille Jones-Doctor.

A funeral service celebrating Emma’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 10, 2025, at First Baptist Church, 81857 42nd Street, Decatur, with Rev. Carl Wright officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Interment will follow at Harrison Cemetery in Decatur.
