Evelyn's Obituary
Evelyn Lucille (Plummer) Rice, of Decatur Michigan passed away into Gods graces on Tuesday June 14, 2022. She was 86 years old. Evelyn was born to the late Joseph and Pearl Plummer on July 25th, 1935, in Lakeville, Indiana as the 11th of 15 children. On May 18th, 1957, she married her husband of 65 years, Richard (Dick) Rice in Mishawaka, Indiana where they started their family. Eager to raise their growing family in the country, Dick and Evelyn purchased a 60-acre farm in Decatur, Michigan where they resided with their 6 children. Evelyn was a homemaker and spent her time raising and caring for her family while her children were young. Later she worked at Rudy’s Manufacturing in Dowagiac, Michigan, then moved onto the Alumni Association at Western Michigan University. After retiring, she owned and operated Gambles Hardware store in Decatur, Michigan with her husband Dick for several years.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Evelyn. She could often be found playing solitaire, watching the Colts play on Sunday nights from her recliner, and preparing her famous macaroni for holidays, get-togethers and special occasions. Most of all she looked forward to spending time with her family. Evelyn had an uncanny ability to find happiness in her daily activities. Her pleasant personality was contagious to everyone she met.
Evelyn is survived by her husband Dick Rice; children Terri (Henry) Karasch, Richard (Julia) Rice, Bob (Riva) Rice, Sharon (Jeff) Vliek, Tom (Melanie) Rice and Pat Rice; 20 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; siblings Jake (Gail) Plummer, Dan (Sandy) Plummer, Leila Masten, Jean (Dean) Rice and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Preceding her in passing are her parents Joseph and Pearl Plummer and siblings John, Bob, Glen, Rich, Joe, Jim, Lynn, Martha, Donnie and Iris.
Per Evelyn’s request, cremation will take place and a memorial gathering will be held in her honor on Saturday June 18th, 2022, at Grace Apostolic Lighthouse Church, 47377 M-51, Decatur, MI 49045. The visitation will take place from 11:00-12:00 followed by a service at 12:00 and luncheon immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be directed to Grace Apostolic Lighthouse Church or Hospice of Southwest Michigan in memory of Evelyn Lucille Rice.
