Evelyn Jane Stambek, 93, of Decatur, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 9, 2025 at White Oaks Assisted Living in Lawton.
The family will have a memorial gathering from 10am until the time of celebration of life service at 11am, Monday, May 19, 2025 at Newell Chapel, 83313 M-51, Decatur, with Pastor Jim Abshagen officiating. Burial to follow at Lakeside Cemetery, Decatur. Memorial contributions may be given to the Decatur Human Services Food Pantry, 102 S. Phelps St., Decatur, MI 49045.
Evelyn was born January 21, 1932 in Hartford, MI. Early in life, she and her sister were adopted by Edward and Elizabeth (Keeny) Vliek. On November 8, 1952 she married the love of her life, Edward “Sonny” Stambek at Holy Family Catholic Church in Decatur; together, they had five children. In her younger years, Evelyn enjoyed league bowling, which she participated in for many years. Later in life, she found pleasure in reading a good book or taking on a challenging puzzle. She never missed an opportunity to join her sister at the local casino – and they loved their monthly opportunities! Along with Sonny, she was also a life-long member of the VFW Post 6248 in Decatur.
Evelyn will be missed by her husband of 72 years, Edward “Sonny” Stambek; her children, Kenny Stambek, Daniel (Julie) Stambek, Joseph Stambek, and Mary Beth “Betsy” Connolly; her grandchildren, Gregory, Christopher, Rebecca, Rachel, and Alexis; and her great grandchildren, Ryan, Blake, Brianna, Sloan, James, and Brooke.
She is preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Stambek; her siblings, Elaine Overley, Marcia Krueger, and Edward Vliek; and her parents.
