Gladys's Obituary

Gladys J Pickering, a lifelong resident of Michigan died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, May 6, 2024.

Gladys was born March 27, 1935, in Alpena to the late Henry and Alda Kann. She inherited their love of family and penchant to make life-long friends which she then shared with the love of her life, Keith Pickering whom she married on December 14, 1963. He preceded her in death but not before the two of them cultivated a treasure trove of memories enriching the lives of all they met. Wherever you found her she shared her gift of hospitality whether at home, Green Gables hunting camp, or church. She loved playing cards, cooking big meals and there was always plenty of laughter.

Professionally, Gladys was unmatched in her secretarial and organizational skills and as a cradle to grave Lutheran, she served her Lord faithfully in this vocation. She started at Mulvena Truck Line in Alpena moving to metro Detroit where over the years she served as a church secretary at St. Peter’s, Eastpointe, St. Paul’s, Sterling Heights, and as the secretary to the Assistant Superintendent of Gaylord Community Schools and later United Way. She was active at church and in her community, serving and volunteering in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, singing in choirs including the Otsego Choral Society and a female barber shop group in St. Joe, and volunteering on various boards and with hospice.

She is survived by her daughter, Tracie (Marty) Berghaus, son Eugene (Cathy) Pickering and 4 grandchildren Clare and Tanner Berghaus, and Megan and Madison Pickering, a niece Carla (Jack) Jones and three nephews, Allyn, Bryan (Layale), Daryl (Cathy) Weinert. She was preceded in death by a daughter Amy and sister Doreen (Carl) Weinert. She was blessed to have shared in the lives of Keith’s son David (Linda) Pickering and their children Geoff and Lesley and grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Starks& Menchinger Funeral Home on Monday, May 13, 2024, from 5:00-7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at 11:00am at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Joseph with the Reverend Michael J Roth officiating. A light luncheon will follow in the Fellowship Hall of the church. She will be laid to rest with her husband at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
