Harold's Obituary

Harold Leroy Gillette, Sr., 73, of Decatur, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at his home in Decatur. He was born August 23, 1952 in Decatur to Glen and Mable (Clendenin) Gillette.

The family will receive guests from 1pm until time of celebration of life service at 2pm, Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at Newell Chapel, 83313 M-51, Decatur. Harold was always an active person, even since birth. Being a mischievous young man often landed him in trouble, which resulted in him entering the job core at 15. He proudly served his country with the US Army from 1970-1972. He was a very talented artist – specifically when it came to drawing and painting – a pastime he often enjoyed. He also was an avid gardener and coin collector. He will always be remembered for his infamous peace sign drawn and painted below the stoplight in downtown Decatur!

He found his greatest joy in the simple moments – spending time surrounded by family and friends. Whether sharing stories, laughter, or quiet companionship, he cherished the connections that made life meaningful. His warmth, presence, and genuine enjoyment of others will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Harold will be missed by his children, Tracy (Ray) Brandt, Steve (Tamara) Gillette, and Harold (Penny) Gillette, Jr.; his grandchildren, Brittany, Courtney, Kayley, Kelcey (Sam), Victoria (Victor), Harold III, Austin, and Tyler; his great grandchildren, Zazzy, Aubree, Chase, Hunter, Paisley, Addison, Audrianna, Adelaine, Aurora, Alvin, and Elijah; and his sisters, Dolly (John) Dempsey, and Jane (Mike) Flanagan.

He is preceded in death by his siblings, William Gillette, Shirley McLemore, and a baby sister, Sandra May Gillette; and his parents.
