Hilda's Obituary

Hilda Daugherty, 86, of Berrien Springs, MI, passed away peacefully at home on February 6, 2024.

The daughter of Kaspar and Veronika (Dreer) Fasching, Hilda was born on Easter Sunday, March 28, 1937 in Mammendorf, Germany. The youngest of 6 children, she grew up in that small town outside of Munich during, and in the aftermath of, WWII. Her favorite childhood memories were of playing soccer, helping her mom in the kitchen and midnight masses on Christmas Eve. She moved to the United States in 1957 with her first husband and liked to say she taught herself English by watching TV.

Over the years, Hilda experienced times of great joy but also tremendous loss, most notably when her husband Earl was taken from her by cancer far too soon. Although life wasn’t always easy, her strength and work ethic were inspiring. She was known for bold fashion choices, bling on everything, keeping her property immaculate, and her endlessly generous spirit. She loved her family and friends deeply and wanted nothing more than to see them happy. Hilda will be missed greatly by those that loved her. The world has a little less sparkle without her in it but we take comfort in knowing she is in a place where all the fabulous clothes are in just her size and the heels are never too high.

Hilda is survived by her 5 children - Patricia (Mark) Schuelke of Stevensville, Barbara (John) Hannon of Berrien Springs, Richard Ruthsatz of Tucson, AZ, Susan McWright of Abilene, TX, and Irene Weaver of Stevensville; 5 grandchildren - Amanda (Matt) Bradley, John (Beth) Hannon, Sarah (Steve) Zwar, Patrick Hannon, and Jeremy Weaver; 6 great grandchildren - Preston, Mia, Hunter, Alaina, Caden, and Paxton; and 2 step great grandchildren - Jackson and Megan.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents and siblings - Sophie, Fritz, Kashie, Lina, and Willie.

A private service will be held at Saron Lutheran Church in St. Joseph, MI. In lieu of flowers or memorials, treat yourself to something nice at Kohls. Those wishing to share a memory of Hilda online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com
