Hobart Gene “Hoby” McLaughlin, Sr., 89, of Benton Harbor, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2022, at Spectrum Heath Lakeland – St. Joseph. A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be held on Friday, July 1, at 2 PM at Crystal Springs Cemetery, 1655 E. Napier Ave., Benton Harbor, with Pastor Michael Fields officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, June 30, from 5 PM until 7 PM at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Hoby was born on October 17, 1932, in Tuckerman, AR, to Talmadge & Ruth (Mitchell) McLaughlin. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1950 and continued his education by attending Lake Michigan College. Following college, Hoby proudly enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War. On June 6, 1955, Hoby married the love of his life, Betty Anderson, in Benton Harbor. The two were happily married for 63 years before Betty’s passing in 2017. Hoby worked for New Products Corporation and retired as a Plant Superintendent after 45 years. He was very active in working with M.A.R.S. (Military Affiliated Radio Services) & HAM Radio for over 50 years. He also enjoyed being outdoors fishing & camping and spending time at his cabin up north is Walhalla, MI.
Hoby is survived by his children, Elizabeth Renhack of Eau Claire, Hobart “Gene” McLaughlin, Jr. of Eau Claire, Phillip McLaughlin of Benton Harbor, and Tracey McLaughlin of Akin, SC; grandchildren, Roland, Samantha (Chris), Joseph (Carrie), Jimmy, Amanda (Ben), Rachel (Havian) and Toni; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Talmadge & Ruth; wife, Betty; son, Roger McLaughlin; brother, Paul McLaughlin; daughter-in-law, Darlene McLaughlin; and son-in-law, Michael Renhack.
