Indira's Obituary

Indira M. Shah, 72, of St. Joseph, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at her home surrounded by her loving family after a courageous and determined battle with kidney cancer.

Indira was born on April 28, 1954, in Mehsana, Gujarat, India, to Chinubhai and Saraswatiben Shah. She married the love of her life, Dr. Mukund Shah, on February 21, 1975, in India. Soon after, they immigrated to the United States, where they built a beautiful life in St. Joseph—raising their family and becoming a welcoming presence in the local Indian community.

Indira had a deep love for cooking and took great joy in feeding others, always ensuring that no one left her home without a warm, freshly prepared meal. She was outgoing, adventurous, and well-traveled, embracing new experiences and cultures with ease. Known for her ever-present smile, strong faith, and determined spirit, she lived her life with positivity and resilience. She enjoyed playing cards, staying active, and had a keen sense of style. Indira placed great importance on education and took immense pride in raising her children and grandchildren, who were the center of her world. She was especially known for welcoming newcomers to the community and for her desire to help those in need, reflecting her generous and compassionate heart.

Indira is survived by her husband of 51 years, Dr. Mukund Shah; her children, Dr. Ami (Matthew) Shine and Dr. Chirag (Anita) Shah; her beloved grandchildren, Noah, Ethan, Luca, Mia, and Deven; and her siblings, Dipakbhai (Indira) Shah and Sushilaben (Jitendra) Shah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chinubhai and Saraswatiben Shah.

Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, May 2, 2026 from 1pm until 3pm at Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Services, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, MI. A prayer service will be held immediately after with cremation to follow. In keeping with Indira’s generous spirit and her wish to help feed those in need, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Akshaya Pātra (www.apusa.org) or the Soup Kitchen of Benton Harbor (www.soupk.org). Donations can also be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org) in her honor to support others battling cancer.
