James's Obituary

James Murray Caple, 72, of St. Joseph, a devoted man of God, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 19, 2023. He was born November 20, 1950 in St. Paul, MN to Wesley and Mary (Hadler) Caple.

Jim was a graduate of Lakeshore High School, Michigan State, and the University of Minnesota, where he obtained his Doctor of Dental (DDS) degree. He cherished fatherhood alongside his bride, Laurie and two beloved sons, Stephen and Ethan. His passion for the outdoors was surpassed only by his selfless love for family, friends and the communities he lived in. After his retirement from practicing dentistry, Jim and his wife returned to Saint Joseph to be near immediate family where his compassion and generosity spilled over into all those he encountered. He felt tenderness for creatures of all kinds, but especially dogs, and he knew the name of most every pup in his neighborhood. Jim had a heart for those in need which was reflected in many areas such as his missionary work in Honduras, the grilled bratwurst and fresh socks he offered to the homeless, and his newest outreach, the Berrien County Soup Kitchen. He was a master handyman and especially enjoyed woodworking, renovating the family’s historic home, fishing, and camping expeditions on Lake Superior’s Apostle Islands with his boys. He deeply cherished being “Papa” to his brand-new grandson and namesake, Arlo James.

Jim is survived by his wife, Laurie (Anderson) Caple, whom he married May 11, 1985 in Bloomington, MN; his sons, Stephen (Adelae) Caple, and Ethan Caple; his new grandson, Arlo James Caple; his mother, Mary Caple; his brothers, Steve (Michelle) Caple, Jeff (Patti) Caple, Scott (Meredith) Caple, Dave (Kristal Lynn Archer) Caple; his sister-in-law, Linda Caple; his in-laws, Dennis and Elizabeth Anderson; his sisters-in-law, Lisa (Don) Walla, and Lynn (Tom) Petroff; many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his treasured golden retriever, Rudy, who brought him immense joy.

He is preceded in death by his father, Wesley; his brother, Guy; and his nephew, Jacob.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at Saron Lutheran Church, 510 Main St., St. Joseph. The family will receive guests from 11am until time of memorial service at 12pm. Interment will be held privately. Memorial contributions may be given to the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen, www.soupk.org or Saron Lutheran Church www.saronlutheran.com.
