James's Obituary
James Emil Ertman, 83, of Benton Harbor, passed away on Monday, November 4, 2025, surrounded by his family.
A celebration of James’s life will be held on November 12, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Bernard Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Berrien County Youth Fair.
James was the son of Margaret and Emil Ertman. He grew up in Sodus on the family farm and made farming his career, managing Friday, John Burbach, Berry Brook Farms, Michigan State Research Farm, and Michigan Blueberry Growers.
Farming wasn’t just a job—it was his passion. He loved going to work each day and took great pride in caring for the land. At the end of each farming season, he looked forward to his hunting trips to Colorado, where he would hunt elk and deer with his farming friends.
James enjoyed spending time with his family—from cheering on his grandchildren at sporting events to family gatherings and sharing stories. He loved hosting pool parties and spending holidays all together. His kindness, work ethic, and laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his children: Chris Visin, Jon Ertman, Annette Ratter, Gina Kruck, and Tina Perigard; sister Sharon (Dennis) Cayo; brother Jerry (Judy) Ertman; brother-in-law Bob Prillwitz; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Robert Kruck; sister Marybeth Prillwitz; and his parents, Margaret and Emil Ertman.
