Jim's Obituary

James "Jim" Frederick Stringer, 78, of Benton Harbor, MI passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2025 at MediLodge of East Lansing, MI.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 28, 2025 at the Coloma Seventh-day Adventist Church, in Coloma, MI with Pastor Gerhard Erbes officiating. Friends may visit before the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma, MI. Jim was born on May 6, 1946 in Benton Harbor, MI, to Fred and Lena Stringer. In his youth he loved playing with neighborhood kids, exploring the woods, ice-skating/playing hockey on their home-made pond, scuba diving with his dad, and many other outdoor activities. At age 17 he joined the Navy on May 6, 1963, while still in High school. He graduated June 11, 1964 from Benton Harbor High School. On September 5, 1966, while serving active duty in the Navy, he married Alicia Gatmaitan Anzures in Santa Rita, Guam. They traveled between Guam, Philippines, and Michigan, but finally settled in Benton Harbor, MI. During this time they had 6 children in 6 years, who kept them very busy. After settling in Michigan, Jim continued to serve in the Navy Reserve until he was able to retire with a total of 20 years, 1 month, and 17 days. He was also employed as a civilian with Bendix/Bosch for 30 years and retired April 1, 2004. He was a member of the NRA, ARRL, the Blossomland Amateur Radio Association, and was a collector of many items, especially magazines.

Jim is survived by Alicia, his wife of 58 years; daughter Maria Khaw; son James F. (Princella) Stringer, Jr.; son Michael (Karen) Stringer; daughter Theresa (Ben) Burdick; daughter Jennifer Dasani; 17 grand-children – Nathan, Hannah, Rachel, and Lydia Khaw; Emily Stringer, Dimitrios and Elvia Cortez; Josiah, Abigail, and Anna Stringer; Michael James, Zachary and Alexander Stringer; Dillan Burdick; and Alisha Scales. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, his son Matthew, and his grandson Ethan.
