James's Obituary

James Hendryx Mosier, Jr., age 77, a lifelong resident of Dowagiac, passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 22, 2025, while visiting family in Dickson, Tennessee.

James was born April 1, 1947, to James and Camille (Chrastil) Mosier, at Lee Memorial Hospital, Dowagiac, and joined older sister Connie. Jimmy, as he was affectionally known, loved getting into mischief around construction sites, being involved throughout school in scouts, the audio-visual club, wrestling, football, and played the trombone, tuba, and Sousaphone for the school and All-Star bands. After graduating from Dowagiac Union High School in 1966, Jim joined the United States Navy and earned the rate of GMM-3 while he spent time as a plank owner on the USS Josephus Daniels (DLG/CG-27) and later the USS Biddle (CG-34). Afterwards, he returned to Dowagiac and was hired as a dispatcher at Dowagiac’s police, fire, and ambulance department. He transitioned to working in the fire and ambulance departments (8 years and 10 years, respectively) before beginning a 32-year career with the Dowagiac Police Department.

In December 1982, he married Carolyn (Toll) with whom he has two children, Carey and Steven. Jim enjoyed recreational volleyball, coaching softball at Rotary Park, watching the University of Michigan Wolverines football, Dowagiac football games and wrestling matches, reading about ancient Rome, and naval history. For work, he taught CPR courses for EMS, was awarded Officer of the Year, was a DARE representative, a bike patrol officer, community police officer, among other notable awards received during his tenure. After retiring from the police department in 2002, Jim spent his time working in various places around Dowagiac, traveling with family, and indulging his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years – Carolyn Mosier; two children – Carey (Chris Herbison) Mosier and Steven Mosier; four grandchildren - Shane, Hayden, Catherine, and Elijah; nephew; niece; cousins; and “the guys” - Mike Heidenreich, Bob Barney, Gary Losey, Jim Kusa, Steve Harrison, Ryan Murray, Jerrid Ostrom, and Ed Owen.
