Janis's Obituary
Janis Elaine Sexton, 89, of Buchanan, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2026, at Brentwood at Niles Senior Living.
A celebration of life gathering will be held from 1 – 4 pm on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the Buchanan Area Senior Center, 810 Rynearson St., Buchanan. Arrangements have been entrusted to Swem Chapel, Buchanan. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.swemchapel.com.
Janis was born on February 21, 1937, in New Troy to Phil J. Sexton and Vera L. (Spaulding) Sexton. She graduated as valedictorian from Buchanan High School in 1955, a reflection of her dedication and strong work ethic from an early age
Janis devoted many years of her professional life to Church World Service in Elkhart, where she worked faithfully until her retirement in 1999. Outside of her career, she found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved crossword puzzles, reading, and crafts, especially when she could share those moments with her grandchildren.
Janis was an active and devoted member of the Senior Center, generously giving both her time and support. She enjoyed participating in a variety of activities, from playing cards to helping prepare the monthly newsletter, always staying engaged and connected with those around her.
Above all, Janis treasured her family. She deeply cherished the time spent together, creating lasting memories filled with love, laughter, and warmth.
Janis is survived by her daughter, Pamm (Randy) Smith; son, Michael (Sonya) Whiteman; grandchildren, Erik Haugen, Sara (Ron) Fizer, Lora Haugen, Andrew Smith, Vera Whiteman, Janis Whiteman, Tiffany Alliy, Danielle Hively, Natasha Hively, Felicia Hively-Hurlbutt, 26 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Phil and Vera Sexton, her sister Loralee Murchland, her brother Raymond Sexton, and granddaughter, Maranda Smith.
