Joey's Obituary

Joseph “Joey” Daniel Hartmann, age 40, from Fennville peacefully passed away while surrounded by loved ones on Monday, February 26, 2024. Born in St. Joseph, Michigan on March 28, 1983, Joey was the cherished child of Daniel and Donna Hartmann. He tied the knot with his beloved Anna Carlene "Carly" Gaarde on August 4, 2012.

Joey is lovingly remembered by his wife Carly, his devoted parents Daniel and Donna Hartmann, his siblings Danny and Laura Hartmann, as well as his extended family Tom and Tara Phelps, Dave and Lori Gaarde, Harold and Sara Gaarde, Dick and Bonnie Rhinehart, Sara Gaarde, Amanda Akgul, Abbey LaDuke, Aaron Phelps, and his six nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents Patrick and Lorraine Hartmann, Donald and Jeanette Wooster, and Sylvia Van Strien.

Joey graduated from South Haven High School and went on to Western Michigan University where he received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Environmental Studies. It was in South Haven where he found the love of his life, Carly, during Labor Day Weekend. They married and together have lived in Florida, Colorado, Oregon, and Idaho.

A nature enthusiast at heart, Joey found solace in outdoor activities like fishing, skiing, golfing, and hiking. He treasured his pets Olive (who he quickly nicknamed Beaky), Baby Boost, and Huckleberry. A stickler for perfection, Joe took meticulous care of all things dear to him, especially his Subaru and golf clubs. Known for his playful nature, he enjoyed teasing those he loved and spreading joy through laughter. Even though cancer took so much from him, he never lost the ability to make his wife Carly laugh. It was always evident that she thought he was the funniest guy in the room.

Throughout his cancer journey Joey showed incredible strength and resilience, teaching us all valuable lessons about perseverance and the importance of cherishing every moment. An avid collector of hats, he could be found wearing a different one every day, even when his illness kept him indoors.

Joey’s untimely passing has left a void in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to have known him, and he will be deeply missed.

Visitation for Joey will be Monday, March 4, 2024 at Filbrandt Chapel, 1076 South Bailey Avenue, South Haven, Michigan 49090 from 11 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 1 p.m. Father Richard Altine will officiate.
