Joe's Obituary

Joseph “Joe” Grimes passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 17, 2023. Born in South Haven Michigan to Harold and Evelyn Grimes on October 2, 1943. United in marriage to Cheryl Leigh Herring on May 23, 1964.

Visitation for Joe will be on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at Filbrandt Chapel, 1076 S. Bailey Ave, South Haven, Michigan, 49090 from 12 p.m. until the time of the Funeral Service at 1 p.m. Pastor Doug Tipken will officiate.

Joe is survived by his wife of 59 years, Cheryl, daughters; Tonya (Joseph) Bird, Jodie Grimes, grandchildren Ashley Paddock Joseph Bird Jr., Taylor Grimes and 5 great grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings; Jeanette Boling, John Grimes, Beverly Grimes and Debbie Cameron.
Preceded in death by his parents and brother Bill Grimes.

Joe was a 1961 graduate of South Haven High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Carson Colorado. That same year he married his High School sweetheart Cheryl and together they had two daughters. In 1978 Joe built his own home in Bloomingdale. He worked for the Kalamazoo Gazette for 40 years. In 1995 he and daughter Jodie joined the mounted division of the Kalamazoo County Sherriff’s department, and Joe was with them for 25+ years. He enjoyed participating in the Pony Express Charity Horse Runs throughout the years. Joe was an avid target shooter, winning numerous trophies. Joe was a one-of-a-kind dad, set in his ways, you always knew where you stood. He loved going to silver Lake and riding dune buggies. He will be forever missed.
