Madelyn's Obituary

Madelyn Esther Fletcher, 100, a lifelong resident of Dowagiac, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2023, at her home.

She was born on April 22, 1923, in Dowagiac, the daughter of Phillip and Ethel (Dillavou) Myers. On May 9, 1942, Madelyn was united in marriage to Marion C. Fletcher. She loved her family and was an avid bird watcher. Madelyn and Marion took many trips to various places to observe the birds. Madelyn was a stay-at-home mom, excellent homemaker and cook. She was a Blue Bird and Camp Fire Girls leader for several years. In her later years, Madelyn enjoyed traveling with her children on various vacations.

Surviving are her four children – Scott Fletcher and Cinda Slaughter both of Dowagiac, Marilyn (Mick) Thomas of Decatur and Julie (Jim) Freshour of Niles; eight grandchildren – Christopher Clark, Gina Freshour, Bill Deering Jr, Mike Deering, Matt Deering, Betsy Fuzi, Callie Grove and Jacob Slaughter; fourteen great-grandchildren; and eleven great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; three brothers; two sisters; and one great-great-grandson.

A service to celebrate Madelyn’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Clark Chapel and Cremation Services, 405 Center St, Dowagiac, where friends may visit with the family from 12:00 PM until the time of service. Pastor Jeff Oliver of Pleasant View Church of Christ will officiate. Private interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Dowagiac. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Madelyn’s name may be directed to Hope Rescue Mission, Pleasant View Church of Christ or Caring Circle Hospice.
